What states do
you operate in?
Starving Students operates
in nine states across the country. We are
located in California, Arizona, Washington,
Nevada, Utah, Texas, Virginia, Washington
DC, Maryland, and Delaware. |
How much should
I tip?
Tipping is completely up
to you based on the service you received.
You are under no obligation to tip, however
you are welcome to tip if you insist on rewarding
the movers for a job well done. |
How long is the
move going to take?
Since each move is always
different, we cannot guess how long the move
will take. To ensure the move is completed
in a timely manner, we encourage you to do
as much packing before we arrive. We recommend
that you pack the smaller items and leave
the heavier items for our movers. If you’re
packed and ready to go, the move will take
less time. |
How much is the
move going to cost?
Since each move is always
different, we cannot provide a verbal estimate
of how much the move will cost, but we do
provide you with our hourly rate. With this,
you can control the cost of your move. To
save more money, we recommend you do as much
packing before we arrive. We recommend that
you pack the smaller items and leave the heavier
items for our movers. If you’re packed
and ready to go, the move will take less time
and you will save more money. |
What happens if
one of the movers breaks something?
Before the move begins,
you will choose which valuation protection
you would like. The valuation you select limits
Starving Students’ liability for damage
or loss. There are two options:
| |
1. Basic Coverage
- This ensures coverage for lost or
damaged items at 60 cents multiplied
by the weight of the item. If your 2-year
old TV weighing 70 lbs is lost or damaged,
you would recover $42 (70 lbs. x 60
cents). This is very minimal protection
and your goods are probably worth considerably
more. This coverage is provided at no
additional charge.
2.
Actual Cash Value
- This option provides for loss or damage
based on actual cash value, including
depreciation, at the time of loss or
damage, up to the total dollar amount
of value declared by you. Continuing
the example, if you purchased that 2-year
old TV new for $300, you would recover
its current worth, about $250. We charge
$149 for up to $20,000 of actual cash
value protection |

Why do you charge
for fuel and worker’s compensation?
We add a fuel charge and
workers’ compensation charge to the
bill to protect our customers. The fuel charge
covers the costs of fuel and maintaining our
trucks. This charge helps to keep your possessions
safe. The workers’ compensation fee
protects you from liability if one of our
employees were to get hurt on your job. |
Are you really
students?
Starving Students is an
equal opportunity employer. We employ qualified
candidates and continue to employ students,
especially during the summer months. |
Are you really
starving?
Today we’re no longer
starving students, but our name reveals a
lot about our history. Our company began when
two young “starving students”
could not find part-time jobs to pay their
way through college. They pulled an old truck
out of a mudslide and painted, “Moving?
Call Starving Students” on its side.
The phone started ringing and the company
has never looked back. |
Are you insured?
Our trucks have an auto
insurance policy, our movers are protected
by Worker’s Compensation insurance,
and our General Liability policy protects
our customers’ real estate. |
Are you bonded?
Yes, Starving Students
is bonded. |
How
big is the truck?
Our trucks are 26 ft. bobtail
trucks. |
Do
you have different size trucks?
All our trucks are the
same size. They are all 26 ft. bobtail trucks. |
How

trucks are 26 ft. bobtail trucks. |
Why
are your prices so high?
Starving Students is fully
licensed and insured, and does not hire day
laborers. Since we often compete with bandit
movers, who oftentimes are uninsured and hire
day laborers, our prices might be higher than
our competitors. However, we’re proud
to say that our customers are paying more
for a higher quality, professional move. |
How
long does it take to pack?
Since every customer has
a different variety of things that they need
packed, we would not be able to guess how
long the packing will take in your case. However
our movers work as quickly and efficiently
as possible. If you would like to minimize
the time the movers spend on packing, we recommend
that you pack as much as possible before we
arrive. If you’re packed and ready to
go, the move will take less time and you will
save more money. |
Do
you provide boxes?
You can order boxes from
our website and the delivery is free! We sell
boxes and packing materials at discounted
prices. We offer a wide variety of boxes and
supply kits to meet your specific needs. Also,
if during the move, you realize you need more
boxes, ask your driver. We carry some boxes
and packing materials on our trucks. You can
conveniently purchase these materials from
the driver. |
Do
you provide storage?
Starving Students only
provides storage in the city of San Diego.
If you need storage, please make arrangements
with your local storage facility. |
|
Can
you hold anything in your truck overnight?
Starving Students cannot hold
anything in our trucks overnight. |
Can
we make an extra stop to get some things from a
storage facility?
Yes, you’re in charge of
the move. We can make extra stops anywhere you need
to, but keep in mind that we do charge by the hour.
|
Why
is your arrival window so long?
Can you shorten or narrow down
the window of arrival Our morning arrival window
is between 8 a.m. and 12 noon and our afternoon
arrival window is between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. We have
a 4-hour arrival window to take into consideration
scheduling our crews and trucks. If you need to
narrow down the arrival window, we can put in a
request but we cannot guarantee it.
